Dedicating by Sundance
We’ve Hit the Trail
Riding Beyond’s first summer session began this past week with four women enrolled, kicking things off last Sunday with a clinic by Galen Miller as a benefit for Riding Beyond.
Sundancing
I have been privileged the past 25 years through Jean Houston’s Mystery School community to know Tom and Loretta Cook and participate in supporting the Pine Ridge Reservation. Although I have been invited to their Sundance since its inception over 15 years ago, this year is the first time I felt compelled to attend. Starting early tomorrow morning, I will travel to South Dakota, where on Tuesday we will prepare sacred ground for the dance. Then we will dance for four days, fasting with only water and culminating on the summer solstice next Saturday with a feast. The dance is an extended prayer for the earth and its well-being.
The Sundance is held on the grounds of a wild horse sanctuary and sponsored by the American Horse and Afraid of Bear tiospayes, with much support by Red Clouds and other Lakota families. Loretta has told me how the horses stand present each year to their dancing.
I felt there could be no better place to deepen the dedication of Riding Beyond that began last August with over 40 of you in attendance.
For me personally it will also deepen my increasing desire to attend wisely to the well-being of horses everywhere, as well as my stewardship of the Earth.
